Conditions Affecting Fe Availability
- Soils high in lime (Calcium carbonate concretions)
- High pH soil
- Poorly drained and / or aerated soil
- Excess lime application and shortage of K, induces deficiency
- Low soil organic matter
- Soils with excess irrigation, especially in springs
- Application of Nitrate fertilizer may increase deficiency
- Deficiency is induced due to excess P, Na, Cu, Zn, Mn in soil
- Cold wet soils
- Alkaline soils (pH>7), or acidic sandy soils which also reduce Iron availability due to leaching and
oxidation
