Deficiency Symptoms
New growth turns pale yellow and veins turns slightly light green, with reduced leaf size. Stem appears reddish in some crops like maize, cotton, tomato. Root nodulation decreases in leguminous crops, oil percentage lower down in oilseed crops, along with stunted root growth.
Conditions Affecting S Availability
- Lighter soils, especially after heavy rain, on soils with a poor structure and under any conditions resulting in a restricted root system
- Heavy cropping continuously for many years
- Amount and type of soil colloids (higher clay =less availability)
- Higher pH
- Lower organic matter in soils
- Leaching of Sulphates
